What are dental implants?
If you have lost one tooth, or even several teeth, dental implants are an excellent solution. As the name suggests, a dental implant is a surgical fixture or titanium screw, that is implanted and fixed to your jawbone. This in turn supports a dental prosthesis such as a false tooth, crown, or bridge.
Missing teeth can often make many patients feel self-conscious or embarrassed. Dental implant procedures offer long-term replacement solutions to missing teeth, which could drastically improve these patients’ quality of life.
What if I require bone grafting?
In some cases, there is insufficient jawbone to place the dental implant. In these cases, bone grafting or augmentation procedures can be completed to prepare the jaw for dental implants.
Are there different types of dental implant procedures?
Yes, there are various options available that are dependent on the needs of each individual patient. The most common dental implant procedures include:
Single or multiple implants
Dental implant procedures can be offered for one or more missing teeth, requiring one or more implants or screws to be fixed to the jaw. After some time, the titanium screw or implant will fuse with the bone and provide a solid foundation to which a porcelain crown or bridge can be attached
Complex implants
More complex procedures like All-on-4, All-on-6, or bone grafting are sometimes required. An All-on-4 procedure involves the placement of four dental implants to replace a full arch of missing teeth with a fixed bridge. Similarly, an All-on-6 procedure involves the placement of six dental implants to restore a full arch of missing teeth with a fixed or removable bridge.
While there are a number of options available for the replacement of missing teeth, dental implants are by far the most popular.
